The Bandsaw Box Crafting Process

01

Select wood & laminate

Choose contrasting lumber like Walnut and Maple. Glue them together into a thick solid block.

02

Apply template & cut

Stick our printable PDF template onto the block. Cut the outer shell, slice off the back, and saw the inner drawer shapes.

03

Sand & assemble

Sand the drawer cavities to allow smooth movement. Glue the back plate back onto the shell, finish with oil, and insert drawers.

Bandsaw Box Frequently Asked Questions

What bandsaw blade width is best for cutting boxes?

+

A 3/16" skip-tooth or hook-tooth blade (4 to 6 TPI) is the golden standard. It is thin enough to cut tight curves down to a 5/16" radius, yet thick enough to track straight through blocks that are 3 to 4 inches tall without twisting.

How do I avoid blade drift while cutting bandsaw box drawers?

+

Blade drift is usually caused by insufficient blade tension or a dull blade. Ensure your bandsaw guides (cool blocks or bearings) are set close to the blade, and tension the blade slightly higher than the manufacturer scale suggests for thin blades.

Why do my drawers bind, and how do I fix them?

+

Since the wood swells slightly when you apply finishes, or because of bandsaw blade thickness (kerf), you need to sand the drawers down. Use a spindle sander or hand sand the drawer sides and the inside of the cavity extensively before glue-up.

Can I make bandsaw boxes with a standard scroll saw?

+

No, a scroll saw cannot handle material thicker than 2 inches very well, and its blades are too thin to maintain straight cuts through thick laminated blocks. Bandsaw boxes require a bandsaw for the primary structure, though small decorative details can be cut with a scroll saw.

What wood is best for bandsaw boxes?

+

Contrasting hardwoods work beautifully. Combinations like Walnut (dark), Maple (light), and Cherry (medium) show off laminations. Avoid wood with soft knots or irregular grain that might pull the blade off track.

Everything about bandsaw box making

Guides, techniques, and answers to bandsaw box woodworking questions.

What is a bandsaw box?

A bandsaw box is a decorative wooden box carved from a single, solid block of wood (often laminated from contrasting species) using only a bandsaw. Because the box shell, back, drawers, and secret compartments are sliced from the same block, the natural grain patterns flow continuously across the entire exterior of the finished piece. It is one of the most rewarding woodworking projects.

Bandsaw box templates for beginners

Starting with bandsaw boxes is easy with the right template. Our beginner plans feature simple external curves and a single drawer structure. They are designed to prevent the blade from binding and use gentle, sweeping cuts that a standard 14" bandsaw can handle. Each PDF pattern comes with full-scale template lines, kerf guides, and sanding tips.

Selecting blades for bandsaw boxes

For smooth curve tracking, use a 3/16" hook-tooth or skip-tooth blade with 4–6 TPI. Thick blades (like 1/2") will bind on curved profiles, while too thin blades (like 1/8") can easily wander or bend inside thick hardwoods, causing angled drawer walls.

How to laminate wood blocks for boxes

Stack lamination is the secret to beautiful bandsaw boxes. Glue together woods with distinct color contrasts, such as dark Walnut, red Cherry, and light Maple. Clamp them securely with Titebond II wood glue to ensure there are zero voids in the block before cutting.

Best finishing methods for bandsaw boxes

Penetrating finishes like Danish Oil, Tung Oil, or wipe-on polyurethane are perfect for bandsaw boxes. They accentuate the continuous grain flow without creating a thick surface layer that might cause drawers to stick. Sand lightly up to 320 grit before applying oil.
