The Scroll Saw Fretwork Process

01

Print & prepare wood

Print the PDF template at 1:1 scale. Sand your wood blank smooth (¼" to ¾"). Apply blue painter's tape to the wood to prevent glue residue.

02

Mount & drill holes

Use spray adhesive to stick the pattern onto the tape. Drill tiny starter holes in every internal cutout area for the blade.

03

Cut fretwork lines

Insert your plain-end blade through the entry holes, tension it, and saw along the internal lines first. Cut the outer boundary last.

Wood Species Guide

Wood selection dictates contrast, depth, and character.

Black Walnut

Tone: Deep Chocolate BrownGrain: Rich, wavy grain patterns

Used for shadows, hair, and deep contrast boundaries.

Wild Cherry

Tone: Warm Amber / Reddish BrownGrain: Smooth, subtle satiny grain

Excellent mid-tone wood. Darkens beautifully with sunlight.

Hard Maple

Tone: Creamy Alabaster WhiteGrain: Tight, very clean linear grain

Perfect for bright highlights, snow caps, and white details.

African Padauk

Tone: Vibrant Crimson OrangeGrain: Coarse, highly reflective grain

Adds bold focal points like flowers, beaks, or sunset skies.

Scroll Saw Frequently Asked Questions

What blade size is best for scroll saw patterns?

+

For general 1/4" to 3/4" hardwood, a #5 skip-tooth or reverse-tooth blade is ideal. For delicate fretwork, use a smaller #2 or #2/0 blade. If cutting very thin veneers, opt for a #2/0 or #3/0 jewelers blade.

Should I use pin-end or pinless scroll saw blades?

+

Pinless (plain-end) blades are much better for detailed fretwork. They can pass through extremely small starter holes (1/16" or smaller), whereas pin-end blades require large 3/16" entry holes, which ruin fine fretwork details.

How do I prevent wood burning when cutting tight curves?

+

Wood burning is caused by friction. Lower your scroll saw speed (SPM), reduce forward feed pressure, and ensure your blade is sharp. Applying clear packaging tape over the pattern also acts as a lubricant, preventing burn marks.

What wood thickness is best for scroll saw fretwork?

+

1/8" to 1/4" Baltic birch plywood or hardwood (like Maple, Cherry, or Walnut) is perfect for overlays. For freestanding silhouettes, 1/2" to 3/4" stock provides better stability.

How do I transfer scroll saw patterns to wood?

+

The most popular method is to apply blue painter's tape to the wood blank, then stick the printed paper template on top of the tape using spray adhesive. This makes the template easy to peel off afterward without leaving glue residue.

Everything about scroll saw fretwork & crafting

Guides, tips, and answers to common scroll saw woodworking questions.

What is scroll saw woodworking?

Scroll saw woodworking involves using a small, motorized machine with a fine, reciprocating blade to cut intricate profiles, shapes, and internal fretwork in wood. It allows woodworkers to create delicate filigree, portrait silhouettes, puzzle structures, and layered overlay panels with high precision.

Free scroll saw patterns for beginners

For beginners, we recommend starting with simple silhouettes and thick-line fretwork (10–20 cuts). Our beginner blueprints are designed with sweeping paths and fewer inside corners to build confidence in blade control. Each plan includes a printable PDF template and thickness suggestions.

Scroll saw blade selection guide

Choosing the right blade depends on wood thickness and curve tightness. Standard plain-end skip-tooth or double-tooth blades from size #2 to #5 are suitable for 1/4" to 3/4" hardwoods. Always match the blade size to avoid flexing and burning.

How to cut intricate fretwork safely

For detailed fretwork, drill small entry holes (around 1/16" or 1.5mm) in all waste areas. Always cut the innermost details first, working your way outward. This keeps the wood block structurally stable and easier to support while cutting.

Preventing wood burn during cuts

Avoid pushing the wood too hard against the blade. Use clear packaging tape over the paper template — the heat generated melts the tape adhesive, acting as a natural lubricant that reduces friction and wood charring.
