Intarsia rewards crafters who master a handful of core techniques. Get these right and every project — from a simple 15-piece flower to a 60-piece wildlife portrait — will have that professional depth and finish that makes people stop and stare.
Pattern Transfer Techniques
The most common method is graphite transfer paper. Print or trace your pattern at full size, tape it over a sheet of graphite paper, and rub a ballpoint pen over every line. The graphite transfers cleanly onto your wood blank without damaging the surface. For very large patterns, tile-print across multiple sheets and join them with transparent tape.
An alternative is rubber cement: spray the back of the printed pattern and stick it directly to the wood. The pattern can be peeled away after cutting and the cement rubs off easily with your finger. This works best for thick stock (¾") where you won't be burning through blade entry holes repeatedly.
Blade Selection for Curves vs. Straight Cuts
Matching blade to the cut is one of the most impactful intarsia techniques. Use a #5 or #7 blade for general ¾" hardwood cuts with moderate curves. Drop to a #3 or #2/0 for tight interior curves where you need the blade to pivot almost in place. Move up to a #9 for ripping along a straight grain when thick hardwood resists smaller blades.
Replace blades far more often than feels necessary. A fresh blade cuts cooler, cleaner, and with dramatically less side pressure — your hands won't need to fight the wood, and accuracy improves immediately.
The Elevating Technique
Elevation is what separates intarsia from flat marquetry. By routing or sanding the back of certain pieces, you control which surfaces sit higher than their neighbors. A bird's breast, for example, might sit 3/16" above the wing pieces behind it — creating a convincing sense of puffed-out feathers.
To elevate: mark the desired height on each piece before assembly. Use a planer, thickness sander, or drum sander to remove material from the back. Work incrementally — check fit frequently against neighboring pieces by laying them on a flat surface. The difference between adjacent pieces rarely needs to exceed ¼" for the eye to perceive genuine depth.
Undercutting for Tight Fits
Where two pieces meet at a tight inside angle — the junction of a wing to a body, or a leaflet to a stem — a square edge often leaves an unsightly gap. Undercutting solves this: tilt your scroll saw table 2–4 degrees so the blade cuts at a slight bevel. The top face stays full-size while the bottom is marginally smaller, allowing the two pieces to nestle tightly at the top surface without a visible seam.
For hand undercutting on curved edges, a small rasp or file held at an angle accomplishes the same thing. Work slowly and test the fit every few strokes.
Grain Matching Between Adjacent Pieces
Adjacent pieces should look as if they belong together, even when cut from different species. The key is to orient grain lines so they flow continuously across the piece boundary — like lines of fur that don't stop at the animal's shoulder seam. Before cutting, lay all blanks side by side and draw a quick arrow indicating intended grain direction on each paper template. This 30-second step saves hours of puzzled reassembly later.
When two pieces of the same species meet, the trick is to cut them from adjacent areas of the same board so the grain pattern is virtually identical. This creates a seamless tonal match even without finish.
The Rounding-Over Step
Once all pieces are cut and fitted, rounding over the top edges creates dimensionality. Use a small drum sander, a hand-held rotary tool, or even fine sandpaper wrapped around your finger. Round the top edge of every piece so that the highest point is slightly away from the edge — this catches reflected light differently than a crisp square edge and gives the piece a sculptural quality.
The degree of rounding is a stylistic choice. Some artists barely break the corner; others create bold, rounded pillow shapes. Try both on scrap pieces from the same project to see what you prefer before committing.
Sanding Sequence: 80 → 120 → 180 → 220
Sanding sequence matters enormously for the final appearance. Start at 80-grit only if there are tool marks or tearout to remove. For most scroll-saw-cut intarsia, begin at 120-grit to smooth the cut faces, then 180-grit to refine, then finish at 220-grit for silky smoothness that accepts oil finish beautifully.
Sand each piece individually before assembly. After the final 220-grit pass, wipe each piece with a tack cloth to remove all dust. Do not skip this step — sanding dust trapped under finish creates a chalky, matte appearance instead of the rich, lustrous depth you want.
Finishing Oils vs. Lacquers for Intarsia
Penetrating oils (Danish oil, tung oil, linseed oil) are the preferred finish for most intarsia. They sink into the wood fiber, enhancing the natural color and grain without building a film layer on the surface. The tactile quality of the wood — its texture and even its slight roughness — is preserved. Apply two thin coats, letting each dry fully (24 hours minimum) before recoating. Buff with 0000 steel wool between coats.
Lacquer and polyurethane build a film on top of the wood. This protects beautifully against humidity and fingerprints but flattens the textural depth that makes intarsia distinctive. If durability is the priority (a kitchen piece, a child's room), a satin water-based polyurethane is a reasonable choice. Avoid gloss — it reflects light in distracting ways across uneven elevations.
Never use a penetrating oil on pieces that include Maple or other pale woods without testing first. Some oils yellow light species noticeably, changing your carefully chosen color relationships.
Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Gap between pieces: Usually caused by cutting inside the line rather than outside. Fix by sanding the adjacent piece's edge very slightly until the gap closes. A touch of gap-filling cyanoacrylate (CA glue) works for hairline gaps that won't affect appearance.
Cracked thin piece: Short grain on a narrow piece is fragile. Reinforce from the back with a thin strip of the same wood glued perpendicular to the grain — this is invisible on the finished piece. For future projects, design out any piece narrower than ½" at its thinnest point.
Finish blotching on Cherry: Cherry is notoriously prone to uneven penetrating-oil absorption, especially at end grain areas. Apply a thin wash coat of very diluted shellac before the oil to even out absorption. Sand lightly after the shellac dries, then apply the oil as normal.
Uneven elevation: If a piece is sitting too low after routing, shimming from the back with a thin piece of veneer is the clean fix. Glue the veneer shim to the back of the piece, sand flush, and reassemble.
Mastering these intarsia techniques takes time but the progression is rapid. Each project teaches something new — and the work you produce at 20 hours of practice looks dramatically different from the work you produce at 200.
